This apply ONLY to phone given during Google IO 2009.
The whole upgrade takes only about 15 minutes and is pain-free.

Version 1.6 is the newest version of Firmware available. Connect your phone via USB, I assume you are developer and have Android SDK installed.
I will go over these steps couple more times to make sure it is very simple to follow, then I will remove this message.

1.
Download "Radio Image 1.6" ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip
copy the ZIP to SDCARD
$ /opt/android/android-sdk-mac_86/tools/adb push /Users/uki/Downloads/ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip /sdcard/update.zip
1160 KB/s (9181630 bytes in 7.724s)
3.
Wait a minute then check if download was correct (returns nothing immediately)
$ /opt/android/android-sdk-mac_86/tools/adb shell sync
4.
Press OFF button (bottom right) for few seconds
5.
power off, OK and press HOME and OFF buttons together until the "recover mode shows up"
6.
press HOME and OFF buttons to go the the menu
7.
select "apply sdcard:update.zip"
8.
select reboot
The Firmware is still 1.5, but it was necessary to do it.
9.
download recovery-image-package 1.6
$ /opt/android/android-sdk-mac_86/tools/adb push /Users/uki/Downloads/signed-google_ion-ota-14721.zip /sdcard/update.zip
1325 KB/s (53965203 bytes in 39.752s)
$ /opt/android/android-sdk-mac_86/tools/adb shell sync
follow steps: 3 to 8
