I decided to try USB tethering from my DROID since my MacBook Pro's WIFI antenna is acting up (I pick up only the strongest signals) and sometimes I would like to tap into free WI-FI. I do have AT&T 3G card that works on my laptop most of the time.

Here are the steps:

1) Scan the code below (PdaNet app) with your DROID's "Barcode Scanner" application. If you attended my previous classes, you already have it installed.

2) Download the desktop client (Mac provided):

3) Restart your Mac and connect

There is a price... about $25 for the full version after 14 days.

4) TEST SPEED:

a) no tethering using AT&T 3G (baseline TEST)

Download Speed: 1599 kbps (199.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1143 kbps (142.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Download Speed: 664 kbps (83 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 228 kbps (28.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

b) tethered using Verizon 3G

Download Speed: 1842 kbps (230.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 552 kbps (69 KB/sec transfer rate)

Download Speed: 664 kbps (83 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 228 kbps (28.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

c) tethered using Caribou Cafe WI-FI:

Download Speed: 705 kbps (88.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 431 kbps (53.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

d) tethered Corner Bakery, Vernon Hills, IL

Their free WIFI Internet is a borderline dial-up and the place is empty!

Download Speed: 230 kbps (28.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 171 kbps (21.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

As you can see using WI-FI is not necessarily faster and 3G speed varies greatly depending on location.
