GDG Chicago Android

Google Developers Group

According to the newest Android stats Android 2.2 (Froyo) now is the most popular OS on the Android-based active devices. A month ago the biggest share was taken by Android 2.1 (41%). But the situation totally changed for the last 30 days - we've got a new leader - Android 2.2 with 43.4%, while Android 2.1 takes only 39.6% and is on the second place.

It’s important to mention also that other Android platform flavors – Android 1.5 and Android 1.6 - are becoming obsolete and now run only on  6.3% and 10.6% of all active devices accordingly.

Situation on the Android market can easily change soon as Google are preparing to represent new version of platform – Android 2.3 Gingerbread.  Of course it will take it some time to get to leading positions, but what is obvious now - that 83% of Android phones run on Android 2.x platform.

This is really good news!

The next thing I am looking for is 95% for Flash/Flex support on both Android, Apple and of course devices like RIM PlayBook (already a Flashy Linux)

We’ve got new stats. According to Google’s latest data more than half of Android-powered devices run 2.2, and only 0.4% users are already working on Android 2.3.

Fresh news about Android platform distribution charts. Now almost 90% of all Android devices run Android 2.1 or above. The biggest part takes Froyo with 57.6%. The smallest percentage belongs to Android 2.3 Gingerbread – 0.8% as for now it is available only on Nexus S. Sub-2.1 – Android 1.5 and Android 1.6 versions had dropped lower than 10-percent mark.

Yes, we made decision that when there is a choice between a cool feature for Android 2.1+ vs. support for older version, the feature will get priority.
